YAHOO! NEWS | Australian farmers warned of looming mouse plague: 'Like a horror story'

Australian grain producers are being warned of a looming mouse outbreak, with rising populations already being reported across key cropping regions.

Reports highlight increasing activity in both Western Australia and South Australia, with conditions favouring rapid population growth and the risk of significant crop damage during seeding.

Grain Producers Australia RD&E spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said the situation is adding to an already complex operating environment for growers.

“This warning comes as grain producers are already dealing with increasing uncertainty around fuel and fertiliser access,” Mr Weidemann said.

“When mice are active at seeding, the risk is immediate. Once that seed is gone, the crop is gone.”

The developing situation is reinforcing the need for timely control measures, as growers work to protect crop establishment in the weeks ahead.
