The economic impact of Western Australia's mouse plague is the focus of a report by The West Australian, which explores the growing cost to grain growers, regional businesses and local communities following the approval of an emergency permit for 50 g/kg zinc phosphide bait.

GPA Western Region Director Duncan Young said it was too early to forecast the full impact on this season's harvest, but warned there could be significant consequences if the outbreak spread further across the Wheatbelt.

"There's no way to project the impact of the current mouse plague on this year's season at this early stage, but if the situation spreads across Wheatbelt areas, there may be significant flow-on effects to the economy."
