THE WEEKLY TIMES | Farmers cut frost-damaged crops

Frosts across southern New South Wales and Victoria could cost millions and have growers cutting for hay in an attempt to address their losses.

A frost mid-September that is expected to cost millions in revenue could cause a large influx of hay to the market that may affect prices in the coming months.

The Weekly Times spoke to Rupanyup farmer and Grain Producers Australia Southern Region Director Andrew Weidemann about his observations in the Birchip region.

He reported paddocks of canola with significant losses and the need for growers to weigh up options to cut hay or put livestock into affected paddocks.

“It’s about economics, whether or not you can make hay out of it and whether or not the hay market will hold up,” he said.
