SBS News reported on the approval of an emergency permit for 50 g/kg zinc phosphide mouse bait, outlining how the decision will provide growers with another tool to manage high mouse populations across Western Australia and South Australia.
The article also highlights the research and collaboration that supported the emergency permit application.
Grain Producers Australia Research, Development and Extension Spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said growers had been calling for access to a more effective bait as mouse numbers continued to escalate.
"While grain producers have had ongoing access to 25g/kg zinc phosphide (ZP25) mouse bait, it's not strong enough to tackle the level of mice issues that we're seeing at the moment," he said.
"Mouse plagues can obviously cause massive crop and financial losses in the absence of adequate management tools, as well as significant psychological stress for farmers, their families and those living in affected areas."
