Grain Producers Australia is hosting a free webinar designed to give farmers direct access to expert advice, to better understand the Federal Government’s proposed ‘super tax’ and support policy debate.
Ahead of this process, GPA Chair and WA grain producer, Barry Large, has published an opinion article this week covering core policy concerns about impacts for the broadacre cropping sector. HERE
Mr Large will lead the online discussion supported by guest expert speakers including, Katie Timms, RSM Partner and superannuation specialist. And John Thomson, rural accountant and founding partner of Seer Financial Group.
“This proposed ‘Super Tax’ doesn’t recognise how farming businesses operate,” Mr Large said.
“Taxing farmers on a theoretical paper gain – especially on family farmland that’s not actually being sold – puts enormous pressure on cashflow and long-term viability and is poor policy that has the potential to create an even more worrying precedent.”
In the opinion article, Mr Large called for farmland to be exempt from the proposed, looming changes.
“While this all seems quite complex and convoluted, there’s really a neat solution on offer. This class of asset – farmland owned by farmers who run intergenerational family businesses which ultimately produces food which helps to feed the nation, while supporting global food security – should be exempt.”
All Australian grain producers and industry stakeholders are welcome to attend the webinar and can submit questions in advance to GPA for consideration. HERE
