Grain Producers Australia acknowledges community discussion regarding paraquat and concerns that have been raised about potential links between paraquat exposure and Parkinson’s disease.

The health and safety of grain producers, agricultural workers and regional communities is critically important to the Australian grains industry.

Grain Producers Australia supports decisions on agricultural chemical use being based on rigorous scientific assessment and Australia's established regulatory processes.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is responsible for assessing agricultural chemicals and determining whether products can continue to be used, under what conditions, or whether further regulatory action is required.

The APVMA is currently finalising its review of paraquat and has stated that it is considering all available scientific evidence, including information relating to potential human health impacts, environmental outcomes and international regulatory developments.

Australian grain producers rely on access to safe, effective and scientifically assessed crop protection products.

Equally, producers rely on a robust regulatory system that continuously reviews products as new information becomes available.

GPA supports evidence-based decision making and ongoing scientific assessment through Australia's established regulatory processes.

The organisation will continue to engage constructively with the APVMA and other stakeholders as the review process progresses.

The APVMA has indicated that a final regulatory decision on paraquat is expected in 2026.
