FARM WEEKLY | Syngenta halts global paraquat programs but Aussie supplies remain unchanged

Plans by Syngenta to phase out paraquat production in some international markets are not expected to impact supply for Australian growers, despite ongoing scrutiny of the chemical.
Farm Weekly reported that the company has confirmed it will cease manufacturing at its UK facility and phase out products in the US, citing commercial factors, but says supply into Australia and New Zealand will continue.
Paraquat remains a critical tool in Australian cropping systems, particularly as part of double-knock strategies alongside glyphosate, with its future also under review by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.
Grain Producers Australia RD&E spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said the global decision should not raise concern locally.
“I've been speaking to them and this is purely a commercial decision… rather than an exit from paraquat because of the regulatory concerns,” he said.
Mr Weidemann said GPA would continue to advocate for paraquat’s role in Australian farming systems.
“We'll continue to argue our position… as an important part of our chemical rotation and a safe product when used according to label instructions.”
