FARM ONLINE | Tony Windsor's view of a murky world and how ag can work a hung parliament

New South Wales grain farmer and former Independent for New England Tony Windsoor has advised lobbyists that a minority government post May 3 election to work with independents.

Farm Online reported on Mr Windsors comments made during a Grain Producers Australia webinar on April 23 that covered the upcoming election and priority issues the ag sector should focus on with the new government.

"The farm sector needs to get to know who these people are," he said.

"They shouldn't just be walking in the door when there is a contentious issue; we need help to stop this windmill or this housing development."

GPA chief executive Col Bettles said Mr Windsor's experience in being at the very centre of the 2010-2013 minority government, overlaid with his life as a grain farmer, would help inform how the group approaches the next Parliament.

"There was plenty of sage advice. We already have a laser-like focus on who are members are and the responsibilities we represent them on, we analyse an issue scientifically and economically before we take a position," he said.

"But you don't just turn up when you want to bang the table or rattle the can, you need to maintain a dialogue, there are some smart people on the cross bench and that should not be underestimated."
