COUNTRYMAN | 'Rare opportunity': Farmers urged to vote in 'historic' grain levy review to examine alternative options

Grain producers are being invited to put forward their thoughts and vote on a proposal for how their grains levy funds are allocated.

The initiative led by Grain Producers Australia is running this month following a great deal of interest in how much money is being held in research and development reserves by the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

Countryman highlighted that GPA Chair and WA grain producer Barry Large was calling on growers to take control and vote for the first time on levy rates since the system was introduced around 40 years ago.

“This is your levy, and your chance to have a direct say in how the system works,” he said.

“Levy rates haven’t changed since 2008, and yet the system has built up record reserves... with more record production and levy collections forecast this year.

“We have a rare opportunity to take a proactive look at the system and make changes that benefit growers.”
