ABC WA COUNTRY HOUR | WA growers urged to have their say on grains levy review

Western Australian grain growers are being encouraged to take part in Grain Producers Australia’s national survey to help determine the future of levy rates paid to the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

For the first time since the system began, growers are being asked to vote on proposed changes to the grain levy, including a 20% reduction in the research and development component. This follows a national consultation process led by GPA.

WA Farmers Grains Council President Mark Fowler spoke to ABC WA Country Hour and said local growers overwhelmingly support a stronger reduction in the levy but must engage in the process to see any change.

“Every grower I speak to supports the position adopted by WA Farmers, PGA and WAG,” he said.

“But even though they support it, they’re not necessarily engaging in the process — and we won’t see any change unless they do.”

Mr Fowler emphasised that a ‘yes’ vote would send a clear message to government that growers want reform.

“If you don’t support the status quo, vote yes and use the comments box to say how deep you think the cut should be,” he said.

“A 50% reduction has strong support in WA, and this feedback will all be taken into account.”

He also highlighted the urgency of acting before this year’s record harvest adds even more to GRDC’s reserves.

“We’re looking at maybe our biggest crop ever,” he said.

“There could be $100 million coming out of WA alone in levies.

That’s why it’s important the cuts are deeper and more immediate.”

Growers can find more information and complete the survey at www.grainproducers.com.au.
