ABC VICTORIA COUNTRY HOUR | Opportunity for Australian canola into China

China’s decision to impose a 75.8% anti-dumping tariff on Canadian canola has reshaped the global market, sparking fresh opportunity for Australian growers.

While Australia has been locked out of exporting canola to China for six years due to biosecurity restrictions, Grain Producers Australia Chair Barry Large told ABC Victoria Country Hour the timing could work in Australia’s favour.

“Our business is about offering up our canola. As an Australian grower myself, I see opportunity here at the moment to bring another buyer back into the fold,” Mr Large said.

With China the world’s largest importer of canola and Australia well regarded for producing high-quality grain under strong biosecurity and sustainability standards, hopes are rising that market access could soon be restored.

Large noted ongoing government-to-government talks are already close to reopening the pathway.

“We certainly welcome China back and we will try and facilitate some trade,” he said.

For growers, the prospect of re-entering this major market reinforces the value of diversified trade and the strength of Australia’s reputation on the global stage.
