Former MP for the New South Wales seat of New England, Tony Windsor, has encouraged rural votes to embrace competition in the upcoming federal election.
The North West Star reported on comments made by Mr Windsor in Grain Producers Australia's election policy webinar ahead of the May 3 election that commentators believe will result in a minority government.
Mr Windsor famously worked as an independent MP in the 2010-2013 minority Federal Government.

One thing that does work in politics is political competition," Mr Windsor said.
"Country people have suffered because they've stayed loyal to people who have never done anything for them.
"Loyalty in politics is never rewarded - the safe seats don't get anything, the marginal seats get attention."
