The Northern Territory Farmers Association (NT Farmers) has joined Grain Producers Australia (GPA) as a financial member, strengthening national representation for grain growers as cropping opportunities expand across northern Australia.

In an article published by Grain Central, NT Farmers President Simon Smith and GPA Chair Matthew Madden highlighted the importance of ensuring Territory growers have a stronger voice in national decisions affecting biosecurity, workforce, research investment and market access.

Mr Smith said advances in tropical crop varieties and agronomy were creating new opportunities for grain production, but further research and investment would be needed to establish commercially reliable farming systems.

“The north is Australia’s next grain frontier, and growers on the ground have the most at stake in getting these settings right,” Mr Madden said.

The article also examines the development of northern cropping, including opportunities for sorghum and pulses, and the importance of ensuring national policy and research priorities reflect the needs of growers establishing grain production in tropical conditions.
