RURAL FOCUS | Biosecurity tax should still be scrapped

GPA Chair Barry Large and Rural Focus host Troy Stockden discuss changes announced by the Federal Government which it says will make the new biosecurity levy "more equitable and more transparent".

The new tax was to be based on 10 per cent of existing statutory agricultural levy rates.

However, the government said on February 13 it would now be set according to "an industry's average share of gross agriculture, fisheries and forestry production over a rolling three-year period".

Barry welcomed the changes, but said more details were needed, and the risk creators – such as importers – should pay a greater proportion of the costs.

"It's unpalatable and we really believe it should be scrapped," he said. "... a good consultation period in the beginning would have saved us all a lot of grief."
