Grain producers are being encouraged to get their votes in today on whether their grains levies are fit for purpose before the consultation process led by Grain Producers Australia closes today.
ABC WA Country Hour spoke to GPA Chief Executive Colin Bettles, who said the feedback from the survey would directly influence a decision by the Federal Agriculture Minister on the breakdown for grains levy contributions.
He said while there was significant funding in reserve for the research and development components of the levy, there was scope to increase the biosecurity activity levy to Plant Health Australia for industry education and preparedness.
"There hasn't been any change since 2008 to the system and that's a long time ago and the system started about 40 years ago," he said.
"It was designed to be flexible so rates can go up they can go down," he said.
"We want to optimise the value and benefits not only for growers but across the system including for national productivity of the grains industry."
