ABC NSW COUNTRY HOUR | Khapra Beetle detection a timely reminder for vigilance

As work continues by Commonwealth, state and territory governments to respond to the detection of khapra beetle in imported goods, Grain Producers Australia is calling for awareness and vigilance in reporting.

GPA Chief Executive Colin Bettles spoke to ABC NSW Country Hour to provide an update, noting that khapra beetle is a high priority pest for the Australian grains industry and Australia remains khapra beetle free.

"The detection's been identified, so now everyone's putting their resources behind the response effort and GPA, in representing Australian grain producers, is certainly involved in that process under the emergency response deeds," he said.

"The main thing for us now is that we're focused on the response effort and so we don't want to be speculating, but you can tell by how seriously we're taking it that that's in proportion to how serious the risk is and it's our job at GPA to put all of our resources towards supporting the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and that's what we're doing.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves with speculation but we just want to use the right terminology.

"We are free of khapra beetle in Australia and this is a detection on imported goods.

"I want people to be aware, not alarmed."
