ABC RURAL REPORT | Grain producers asked to look at their levy rates

Updated: Oct 7

Grain producers are being asked where they would like their levy rates to be going as a part of a national survey being run by Grain Producers Australia.

ABC's The Rural Report journalist Angus Verley spoke to GPA Chief Executive Colin Bettles about what the levy rate balance currently is and how growers could change the make up of their contributions.

"We looked at whether the levy rates were fit for purpose when we started this process with an independent report and analysis in mid-2022," he said.

"The results of this work made it clear that the funds allocated to research and development were significant and would continue to grow and that putting grower funds towards strengthening biosecurity was a fairer and more equitable allocation of funding.

"What we've seen is that the amount that's in reserves has doubled since then and there's been a higher degree of appetite for change in the levy rates and we want to hear from the growers themselves."
