THE WEEKLY TIMES | Grain growers set to get first new knockdown herbicide options in years

Two new broad-spectrum knockdown herbicides could give Australian grain growers more options to manage weeds and herbicide resistance.

The Weekly Times reported Bayer and Nufarm are progressing separate products through the regulatory pipeline, with both potentially available to growers by 2028 if approved.

Grain Producers Australia Research, Development and Extension Spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said new chemistry was particularly important following changes to paraquat use and Syngenta’s decision to withdraw from the Australian market.

“Products that have a similar characteristic to glyphosate or paraquat are used on virtually every Australian farm,” he said.

“We need something to rotate chemistries with to avoid resistance and to put another tool in the toolbox and these products are coming in the nick of time.”
