STOCK & LAND | End of wheat port access code: what it means for growers and what's next

The future of Australia's wheat export framework is back in focus as the Federal Government consults on changes to the Wheat Port Code.

Farm Weekly reported on the proposed transition to a streamlined code and the differing views across industry on how competition, transparency and fair access to export terminals should be managed in the years ahead.

Grain Producers Australia Southern Region Director Andrew Weidemann said the current framework had played an important role in the evolution of the grain export sector and should not be removed entirely.

"Obviously the industry has changed and certain provisions can be updated but we don't necessarily support a full move to a voluntary code of conduct," he said.

"The oversight of the port access code has been helpful in allowing the port sector to evolve."
