RURAL BUSINESS | Locusts on the move
The growing threat of Australian plague locusts across South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria has prompted Grain Producers Australia (GPA) to call for increased vigilance and coordinated monitoring as growers head into a critical period for winter crops.
In an article published by Rural Business Magazine, GPA Chair Matthew Madden, Deputy Chair Mark Schilling and Southern Region Director Andrew Weidemann outlined the risks facing grain-producing regions following favourable autumn breeding conditions.
With the Australian Plague Locust Commission forecasting a moderate to high likelihood of widespread spring infestations, GPA has emphasised the importance of early detection, timely reporting and coordinated government responses.
Mr Madden warned that locusts do not respect state boundaries, while Mr Schilling and Mr Weidemann highlighted the importance of protecting crops during key stages of development and ensuring growers have access to accurate, local information.
The article also outlines practical steps growers can take to monitor locust activity and prepare for potential outbreaks.
