GRAIN CENTRAL | WA delay on introducing tougher phosphine limits welcomed

The Western Australian Government's decision to delay the introduction of tougher workplace exposure limits for phosphine by three years has been welcomed by Grain Producers Australia (GPA), providing growers and the grain supply chain with additional time to address practical compliance concerns.

In an article published by Grain Central, GPA Chair Matthew Madden welcomed the announcement, which follows similar decisions in Victoria and South Australia, and called on remaining states to consider delaying implementation.

“GPA are deeply committed to safe workplace standards, but this new phosphine exposure limit would have seen a real risk to Australia’s biosecurity and trade,” Mr Madden said.

The article highlights concerns about the ability to reliably measure and manage the proposed limits, particularly given phosphine's critical role in protecting stored grain from insect pests and maintaining access to export markets.

Grain Trade Australia also welcomed the decision, calling for a nationally consistent approach that provides growers, storage operators and exporters with sufficient time to develop practical and effective compliance measures.
