GRAIN CENTRAL | SA delays grain dust, methyl bromide exposure limit changes

The South Australian Government has delayed the introduction of new workplace exposure limits for grain dust, flour dust and methyl bromide until at least July 2028, following industry concerns about the practical implications for grain growers and the wider supply chain.

In an article published by Grain Central, Grain Producers Australia (GPA) welcomed the decision, which follows earlier delays for phosphine in South Australia and similar regulatory changes in Victoria.

The article highlights GPA's national survey findings, which revealed 91 per cent of growers were concerned about their ability to reasonably measure, monitor and manage the proposed changes, while 96 per cent did not know where to access further information.

GPA Chair Matthew Madden also raised serious concerns about the scientific evidence underpinning the reduced grain dust limit, questioning the reliance on overseas research using data more than 40 years old and covering grain types beyond those specified in Australia's regulatory standard.

The article examines ongoing calls for practical, evidence-based workplace safety regulations, with GPA continuing to push for greater scrutiny of the science, clearer guidance for growers and a nationally consistent approach that protects worker safety without placing unreasonable requirements on grain-producing businesses.
