GPA LAUNCHES SUPPORT MATERIALS AMID SAFE WORK CONFUSION
Grain Producers Australia (GPA) is helping grain growers prepare for upcoming workplace exposure limit changes with new website resources, after its survey revealed growers remain in the dark about what the changes mean for their businesses.
GPA’s online resources have been urgently developed to assist grain growers nationwide, following survey results that showed 91% of growers are concerned about their ability to reasonably measure, monitor, and manage upcoming work exposure limit changes.
Safe Work Australia released a list of workplace exposure limits, to come into effect on 1 December 2026, for approximately 700 substances and mixtures to replace existing workplace exposure standards.
“Our survey showed us that 96% of growers do not know where to go to get more information about upcoming changes, so we’ve urgently created a one-stop-shop for growers across the nation to access key information about upcoming work exposure limits changes,” GPA Chair Matthew Madden said.
“We understand that regulators have important responsibilities in relation to maintaining safe work standards, but that cannot be achieved if business owners don’t have clear information about what they need to do.
“The benefits of GPA having undertaken our online survey is that we were able to raise awareness amongst growers, as well as enabling us to urgently develop information to support our sector ahead of the upcoming changes on 1 December.
“GPA have also written to the Federal Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations in Australia, to share our survey results and clearly demonstrate the need for more effective communication in relation to such significant regulatory changes.
“GPA are also engaging with state safe work agencies in different states and territories to work through the broader needs of our members related to these workplace exposure changes.
“We know that even with the resources we have developed that there will be other needs for growers in relation to this, and GPA are continuing to work on this to develop solutions wherever possible."
