ABC RURAL | Syngenta ends paraquat sales in Australia after new restrictions imposed on controversial weed killer

Syngenta's decision to withdraw from the Australian paraquat market has raised fresh questions about long-term access to important crop protection products.

ABC Rural reported that while generic products will remain available, Grain Producers Australia believes the company's departure creates uncertainty for growers and the implementation of the APVMA's new paraquat requirements.

Grain Producers Australia Research, Development and Extension Spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said Syngenta's departure left important questions for the industry.

"Syngenta has been the stable foundation of this market for decades," he said.

"Some of the changes in grams active and the withholding periods on late applications in crop, that work will fall clearly on the feet of the industry.

"So it's going to be a cost and that's going to be something that we as the industry will have to work through."
